Another week to remember with Calum Kletta

After the success of the previous session I was absolutely buzzing to get back to the lake to try and catch some more of its scaly residents.

With the car all loaded with plenty more bait, I made the short drive to the lake just a few days later.  It turned out that the swim I had previously fished was still free so I dropped in there hoping to re-create my session the previous week.

All the rods were still clipped to the same area I had fished the previous week, the left hand rod on the back of a gravel hump and the middle and right hand rods on a large silty area.

All the rods were being baited with several kilos of chopped 15mm XXX with a good helping of hemp and this was all coated in the awesome Chilli Hemp Oil.

The rigs were the same as well, a snowman with a white NS1 and a sharpened Gardner Wide Gape Talon Tip on 10” of 25lb Sink Skin.

With the lines slackened, and the bivvy up, I put the kettle on to watch the water as they do love to show in this lake!

The signs were good with a few shows over the areas and several liners just into dark so I went to bed confident of getting off the mark quickly.

It was about 11:30pm when the left hand rod pulled up tight and I was on it quickly to guide it away from the large weedbed to the left of the spot.  It came in with a bit of weed over its head, so didn’t fight too hard, but once in the net I could tell that it was a very decent fish!

It turned out to be a fish called “Beckett’s Fish” which pulled the scales round to 30lb 4oz, I slipped it into a sack ready to photo in the morning.

With the rod back out, I tried to get back to sleep but there was ridiculous numbers of fish showing and I ended up sat on the edge of the bedchair waiting for the next take which came minutes later, the little bobbin on the right hand rod was making its way to the rod blank, signalling another carp was on.

This one put up a much better scrap, constantly diving for the marginal snag but in the end another decent fish was slid into the net.

Once on the mat, I recognised it as a fish called “The Random Linear”, another one on the list I wanted to catch, and weighing 28lb 4oz made a very nice brace!

A few hours later I was rewarded with another bite, and this one again felt like a very good fish, and once in the net I knew that it was my 2nd 30 of the session, a long dark common of 30lb 12oz.  The pictures were done by a mate in the morning, and I sat back buzzing with a result so early into the session!

The sun got up very quickly that morning and I could see plenty of fish making their way to “The High Swim” to sunbathe in the weedbeds all day.

I therefore reeled in and went to have a go, but the seagulls soon scuppered my plans so it was back to the main swim to tie some more rigs up in preparation for the night!

Another load of chops was prepared, which is something I like doing if I am spodding my bait out.  I feel that they will waft down and settle away from each other, rather than landing in a big pile, helping to keep the fish moving between baits leading to better hook-holds.

Everything went out really well in the evening and I settled back to drink tea and wait for some more takes!

I had to wait until the early hours for the first action, but it was the trusty night bite from the left hand rod again.

After a brief scrap a 21lb mirror was sat in the sack waiting for its picture, and it was shortly followed by an 18lb common on the middle rod.  It was a bit disappointing to start catching a few smaller fish, but when the action was this consistent and the fish so stunning, I couldn’t complain too much!

The next bite came in heavy fog at first light and it felt like a much better fish from the off.

It weeded me up badly and I put the rod down for about half an hour before it finally started moving again.  It was fairly straight forward after that and it was soon in the net, another lovely dark common of over 30lb.

I quickly was on the phone to a friend to sort some pictures out, when the right hand rod belted off as well!

This fish felt like a real good one again, holding its ground and just plodding around in the weed.  With the first fish still in the net, it was lucky that I had decided to bring a spare net with me on this session, another big common was soon nestling in the waiting net.

Knowing my friend was on the way, I popped both of the fish into sacks while I sorted getting the rods out, as the fish were obviously feeding heavily on my spot!

This seemed to be the right decision, when 30 minutes later another bite brought an old looking 19lb mirror to the net, making it 5 fish in a morning.

My mate arrived shortly afterwards, and we got the first common out to do some pictures.  It was scale perfect, and looked like a bar of gold in the early morning sunlight.  It pulled the scales round to 31lb 10oz, and after a few shots it was onto the next fish, which was the bigger one!

Once on the mat, we recognised it as one of my target fish known as “The Football Common”, which turned out to be my second PB common in as many weeks weighing in at 32lb 15oz.  I was absolutely made up with this and saw the rest of the morning out before reeling the rods in and nipping to the shops for some supplies and more importantly; more bait!

The weather was on the change after that and over the next 2 nights I only had 2 more bites, resulting in 1 lost fish and my 5th fish over 30lb of the session and a 2nd PB common.

This time it was “The Big Common” which registered a weight of 33lb 12oz!

The action had definitely slowed down, so with 1 night left I decided to give them less bait in the hope of getting faster bites.  It seemed like the plan had worked when mirrors of 22lb 8oz and 23lb 4oz slipped up on the left hand rod during the night, the main area produced another target fish called “The Carp of 2-Halves” weighing in at 28lb 8oz.

I was packing up shortly afterwards, happy with a total of 30 carp during my autumn campaign, tipped by 8 30s and a 40lb’er.

My approach of heavily baiting with Odyssey XXX and fishing NS1’s over the top had certainly paid off, and it was time to head to a different lake in search of some more lumps!
